Tournament adventures in Gorla Milan Empty
PostSubject: Tournament adventures in Gorla Milan   Tournament adventures in Gorla Milan EmptyWed Jun 15, 2011 8:18 pm

Thought i'd share some photos of my adventures over the weekend.

The Oldsubbuteo Tournament was held in Gorla just outside of Milan. We played the whole of a Serie A season 1970/71.

To my dismay i got drawn to represent AS Roma...aaarghhhh!!! Laughing

Each team was represented by 3 players, where we played out a seasons fixtures over the course of a day.

It was probably my best playing performance to date. 3 wins, a draw and a 2-1 loss, the winner coming in the last 10 secs.

We also played out a doubles Tournament, playing out the Coppa Cup of the same year. Players playing alternate shots and defensive flicks. That was lots of fun and you had to keep your brain ticking over.

Plenty of banter and fun...very well organised, with results and League table being produced as goals were being scored. It was like watching the Sky Live ticker being beamed onto the wall... Great stuff, and the result went down to last game.

We finished 4th overall...which was a great achievement. 2 points off winning...

I usually like to spend Mondays visiting Football grounds and places of interest. I spent the day with Fabio B. We went to visit the historic ground of Pro Vercelli, who in their early years won 7 Championships. Also Novara...who the day before got promoted to Serie A via the play offs.

The Lionhearts and Essex boys are also represented in a great 100 page Pannini style sticker album. Nearly 50 OSC Clubs.

I can recommend to anyone going out and having a flick with our Italian bro's...

Here's a few pics...

Thanks for posting Spud

looks like it was a great day at the tournament - well organised & the projector with the live scores is a great touch

The photos of the Pro Vercelli ground are lovely - really like the faded glamour look of the place

and as for the sticker album... Very Happy

Cheers

Paul.

We were very lucky at Vercelli Paul. They were cutting down trees to make way for a new Stand, and also emptying the museum, so as to build a new one. All the Cups were laid out on the terracing. Faded Glamour is a great description.

just been reading about vercellii on wiki - amazing that for a team few outside Italy have ever heard of are still are the 7th most successful team in Italy ahead of Roma, Lazio, Fiorentina & Napoli - thanks for bringing them to my attention

as for 'Faded Glamour', its one of my favourite phrases , nicked from here

one of my alltime favourite songs...

That's cool mate...Has a touch of 'The Smiths' about it...

As for footie Clubs... Read up about the 'Grande Torino'... probably the best Club side that ever played in Italy.

interesting stuff - read a liitle about them before when you posted images of your pilgrimage to Superga - again amazing that this tragedy is so little known over here - i guess Munich will always overshadow it here in the UK

amazing to think that the roma team basically was the Azzuri in the late 40's

as for alessandria - will make a nice trip - maybe only be seeing that grey in the flesh will we be able to determine which was the correct shade SSG should have used Wink

liking this kit, if the outer stripe/arms are the 106 grey

That's the plan Paul...all within driving distance of Milan. Varase and Como as well.

As for Munich...some of the Italian lads had never heard of the Busby Babes and the Munich disaster...suprising how football history doesn't always travel.

As for SSG Alessandria Grey...my gut instinct is that it was mixed by the outworker, when painting batches of them. So many different shades tbh.

The 'blueish hue slate grey' being the most common it seems.

Hi Achim...again welcome to the forum. You will have lots of Subbuteo fun on here.

Many of the people you met at Ely are on this forum. So you are in good company.

I try to play in Oldsubbuteo Tournaments in Italy as much as time will allow.

I've made many good friends. I hope to one day live their.

I stayed in Milan from Saturday to Tuesday. I've been to Milan many times now, so i've found some Hotels near Central Station that i use. I can now find my way around without using a map...which is good.

As i arrived on Saturday evening, I went to my friend Carlo's house to have dinner with him and his wife. After a late night, I got up early and met up with 5 other friends from Milan and we all travelled together by car to Gorla which is outside of Milan.

We played the competition in the morning then had a buffet lunch at the Venue. We then played the rest of the Tournament until about 5.30.

I then spent Sunday evening having dinner with my friend Fabio and his family. Another enjoyable evening. I even ended up going to the local school where everyone was voting for the new referendums. Shocked Laughing And buying Sweets and Cake in the local shops. Basically soaking up real Italian Life and not just the Tourist side. Cool

On Monday I spent the day with Fabio travelling to Old Football Stadiums and having a lazy afternoon lunch.

After saying Goodbye to Fabio, I spent the rest of the night in a Brazilian Cocktail bar in Milan, talking to some American Girls. We all then went for Pizza. Lets say i had a good night and a sore head in the morning... Wink Rolling Eyes Laughing

I spent Tuesday morning drinking Coffee in a bar watching the world go by.

This is a typical Weekend. Most Oldsubbuteo Tournaments in Italy have Dinner on Saturday night as well.

Other players from England go to Italy as well. Mark ( Santiago ) and Steve ( Fingers ) the most noteable others.

I notice Stefano ( Ottiko ) has invited you to the Reggio Tournament. You and your wife should go. You would be made most welcome. The Reggio boys and girls are great fun. You would have a great time.

Hopefully i will see you in Italy, if not at Ely or Maidenhead.

I hope that is enough for you. There is nothing to worry about...you would be made warmly welcome and looked after.

PostSubject: Re: Tournament adventures in Gorla Milan   Tournament adventures in Gorla Milan EmptyThu Jun 16, 2011 10:05 am

Hello Ian,
thanks for your very detailed report, VERY interesting, have given me a "sunny" impression of your stay and the atmosphere in Italy.
After Ely (and Ely was a top experience, not just because of the tournament) I was in the mood to go to England for a longer time, also my partner Elke was enthusiastic, and then I´ve begun to think intensively about the poor Subbuteo situation in Germany. As a member of the DSTFB with my club Gliding Stars (DSTFB is the German Subbuteo Association - which is very focussed on "professional" playing) I will try to move the association in a second independent/old subbuteo direction - but its easier to think than to do. Hope for more players in Aachen, thats the most important thing at the moment.
I know - Reggio Emilia seems to be a fantastic place and tournament. But unfortunately all depends on money&working commitments ... but maybe one fine morning - so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
Cheers and thanks again for your words!

The atmosphere at Italian Oldsubbuteo Tournaments is exactly like at Ely Achim. It is all about having fun...played with a smile on the face and lots of laughter.

Good luck with trying to move in the Oldsubbuteo direction.

We had to do it here...it took a lot of hard work, and the Lionhearts were born. All likeminded people who wanted to play Subbuteo. Don't give up, it can be done and it will be worth it in the end.

I like the concept of playing a season, and teams being shared by different players, Spud. That's a really good theme. We should do this kind of thing.

I'm not sure we have enough players to do it over here mate.

It was a good concept though, as it went right to the last game. It definately works playing with 2 points for a win and not 3.

It would be nice to achieve here though.

YES, Ian, thats the point!! and nothing else - and a dash of phantasy & self-mockery (Gliding Stars Aachen, Manager and official stage name as player: George Best jr.). Ciao.

PostSubject: Re: Tournament adventures in Gorla Milan   Tournament adventures in Gorla Milan EmptySat Jul 02, 2011 6:11 pm

A little bit in late, as usual, I'd like to add my two pennies.
Gorla team tournament format usually leads to very close competitions until the end. We splitted players in three groups based on assumed ability, picking one player from each to form teams. Everyone played 5 matches against same level players, group A played 1,4,7,10 and 13 fixtures, group B 2,5,8,11 and 14, group C 3,6,9,12 and 15. A bit tricky, but fun until the last match, as in the last two editions we had to add a tie-breaker match to call the winning team.
Passing time with Spud is always fun. Plenty of banter, memories, football chat and too much optimism, as we missed Alessandria for the second time in a row! Usually we start in the morning with a well thinked plan, but sometimes an ugly seed spitting woman on Superga hill Shocked, or a meeting with a subbuteo friend tied-up on a photographic set (by the way Ian forgot to mention we visited the 200 years old Arena stadium in Milan, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arena_Civica, where FC Internazionale played until WW II) there's always something that changes our minds. Next time will be the grey Alessandria Spud, promised! Wink
Achim, you will be more than welcomed here in Italy, as everyone who plays Subbuteo in the old style, as Ian says, with a smile on the face. Reggio, Verona and Rome are the best tournaments I played in the last years, but you will find the same friendly atmosphere in almost any Old Subbuteo venue here. Smile

Laughing I forgot all about the Arena Fabio... Embarassed I think it was being distracted by Riccardo's 'fluffing' duties...he hides it well Laughing Pretending to be a photographer doesn't fool me Wink Laughing

Looking forward to Alessandria mate... Hopefully we can avoid 'seed spitting ugly women' in the future... Laughing That was a classic mate...my memories of the Superga will always be of her Laughing
