| It isn't a silly question - you will find that quite a lot of people who play oldsubbuteo do not like lightweight players.. | |

| That box set looks awful...it actually turns my stomach.
Looks like something from the early 90's.
The red Hasbro Subbuteo logo and figure is so oldfashioned looking.
This imho is a failure from day one.

| I really don't know what the future holds for the game, but I guess it doesn't really matter what any of us think, we're already sold ( on the game in general, that is ). Success or failure will rest upon their ability to attract new generations and interest. Is it going to be sold in toy shops in the UK? Does anybody know what the goals and netting like? I do like a nicely styled goal and net bulge. | |

| Leaving aside the changing world/different consumer attitudes etc the game grew to its past popularity for two major reasons
1 The range of teams available
2 The fact you could pick up these teams in almost any town
as they are talking about two boxed sets (which do look very very poor packaging wise) and half a dozen teams this could well be a major problem from day one...
For my day job I cover the whole of East Lancashire in doing so I know of ONE traditional toy shop in the whole area..TWO half decent model shops and about the same number of independent sports shops..now unless they get it into Tesco (Total Soccer sells in supermarkets in Spain/Portugal) they will fail.

| Maybe if they advertise on the tv, but selling in tesco would be fantastic, and iam sure Argos would sell them well. They say in life that history repeats itself, so maybe subbuteo will hit the big time again. I have spent many years playing football games on pc, its boring. Its not the same as playing against real people. Iam so happy i re- discoverd the great game Subbuteo on E-bay.Also they will most lightly advertise on line too. | |

| The bases look like they are somewhere inbetween HW and modern? Kind of old style but lower. Don't TopSpin do something similar, Ian? I think they call them Prima bases? They look similar on the site, at least. | |

| have to agree with spud here, looks dreadful. it was a failure at the end of the 90s, why will it be any different now? I wish Piero and his new venture all the best, but I just don't see who the target market is - kids maybe? ...anyone under 25 remember John Barnes? no? that was a good idea then.
the people who actually still play Subbuteo get overlooked and most won't give a hoot about this new stuff.

| I have taken the plunge and got hold of a new Box Set, from Amazon.
Whilst I agree with some of the comments about the packaging, particularly the inner plastic tray which is a tad naff, the playing figures themselves, in my not so humble opinion , are pretty good. They have a fairly wide base, flattened at the bottom, not so different from the Prodi bases of a few years ago. They curl nicely, and work well on longer flicks.
I am sure we would all prefer to see a new range of HW style products, but if Subbuteo is to survive it needs to attract a whole new generation of players, lets give the makers credit for paying for licences to use Premier League club names, and hope that they promote this new product and bring it to the attention of a wider market.
I would suggest that, even with the current limited range of team sets, they could sell different combinations of Boxed Sets and teams in different regions and even PL / FL club shops ( the red/ white, and black/ white striped shirt sets in the North East, Blue shirts - Red shirts in the Mersey area etc etc. ).
But what do I know ? | |

| i got a leeds team from rui as a swap for a set of saw horse legs after maidenhead and i agrre john - they play quite well.
the bases are a mix of modern and hw as they have some sort of curve but the flat area underneath is bigger than you get on a hw but smallet than on a modern figure.
seeing a subbuteo team in such basic and uninteresting packaging does turn me right off though

I went in to Watford today, to visit my old office and colleagues. Whilst there I looked in John Lewis; they had 3 team sets ( Chelsea, Man Utd and Liverpool ) , all over £14, no box sets seen.
Waterstones had boxed sets at £39.99 and England team sets at £12+
Nothing in main toy shop ( The Entertainer)
I thought it odd that John Lewis sell teams , but no pitches , goals etc...

| I think this thread needs updating and for a good reason!
The reason I am on here is because in the run up to Christmas I was reading an article in the Times, saying that old style Board games and toys were making a comeback and that Subbuteo was the second most sought for product on some internet search engine at the time! It was this very article that caused me to venture onto a few websites and discover how much Subbuteo was out there.
I did in fact try to buy the Club Edition but it was out of stock at all the Argos I tried. Having seen what is in one that was probably a good thing. I ended up getting the Pegasus Man Utd V Barcelona set after working out that buying all the bits I needed individually was more expensive than just ordering a cheap set. I am very impressed with the playing pitch on this and the teams are quite beautifully detailed. That said I suspect what I will end up doing is replacing the teams I defaced by badly repainting them, with their originals. However Subbuteo World does seem to want to charge £15-£35 for the ones I want which seems a lot to me.
To be succesfful, Subbuteo really has to appeal in exactly the same way as it did in the 70s and 80s. If kids get it as a present the actual cost of buying teams is really low so as long as they find their way to the likes of Zuego or Santiago products they will find a whole world of stuff to collect.
